2013 in Summary
Last year on the last day of August, the village of Kells woke early as literally hundreds of locals prepared to take up their posts; registering cyclists, making food and refreshments, manning car parks, directing traffic, marshaling junctions along the 116km route and co-ordinating the numerous fringe events which took place later that day on the picturesque river banks at Mullinís Mill. 450 cyclists enjoyed the fine day and pleasant cycling conditions as they rolled through scenic countryside, charming villages and over hills and valleys with stunning vistas. Many locals also attended the Family Fun Day and later that evening a Cut ní Colour event closed out the day in hair-raising style with many brave locals subjecting themselves to merciless hairdressers for the cause.
Cois Nore Cancer Support Centre received cheques totalling €16,225 from the 2013 events; proceeds from the Kells Kings Charity Cycle (€13,025) and Cut ní Colour event (€3,200). The total amount raised for Cois Nore by Kells Kings fundraising events to date exceeds €36,000.
In addition to supporting Cois Nore over the last two years, a further €4,000 was also raised in aid of local community based organisations in Kells by holding fringe events on the day, These included St Brigid's National School, Kells Childcare Centre and Kells Scouts with donations also made to Kells Handball Club and Mullins Mill.
The Kells Kings Charity Cycle is now established on the annual calendar of cycling events and this website had a record number of 7,920 unique visitors to it in the run up to last years event.
